History

The term “debutante” originates from the French word “débuter,” meaning to make a debut. Historically, the Debutante ball served as the formal introduction of a young woman into aristocratic society. This grand event showcased wealth, impeccable manners, and beauty, with the debutante undergoing extensive training in etiquette, dance, and social graces in preparation for her presentation. The essence of a cotillion lies in its mission to instill respectful manners in young individuals, equipping them to navigate society with confidence and success.

In 1992, the Rho Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® inaugurated the chapter's first Debutante Cotillion, specifically tailored for young African American women, as an annual fundraising initiative. The cotillion’s objectives encompassed scholarship provision, cultural and social training, fostering cultural awareness, teaching proper etiquette, providing educational and financial resources, and promoting community service. Over the years, this endeavor has resulted in the allocation of substantial scholarships to cotillion participants and grants benefiting the community.
